Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs
Section 5.2.7 of the Internet and Networks documentation is out of
date. It refers to editing /etc/modprobe.d/aliases which does not exist
on my installation of Ubuntu Lucid. I believe this could be replaced
with specifying ipv6.disable=1
Just a thought. One method to solve the symptom, if not the root cause,
would be to have metacity/compiz maximise applications to two pixels
beyond the left hand edge of the screen. Alternately, and to similar
effect would be to restrict the mouse pointer to not go all the way to
the left edge,
In fact I've given it a go and it works OK. I use xrandr --fb to adjust
the screen size. I've made this 3 pixels less wide than my actual
screen resolution (1021x768) and the mouse pointer will now not go to
the left most 3 pixels of my monitor. The missing pixels show up as
black but metacity
I agree with roffik. I find this behaviour very irritating when on windows,
and unnecessary in gnome for two reasons:
1. This behaviour is triggered accidentally far more often than I actually want
to rename files
2. Pop up menus are much quicker in gnome than on windows as the menus pop up

the scroll bar according to Fitts's law.
This is gedit 2.22.3 on Ubuntu Hardy with the standard

The keyboard shortcuts in Openoffice.org are inconsistent with the rest of the
desktop.
Undo is Ctrl+Y rather than Ctrl+Shift+Z
F11 brings up style stuff rather than full screen
Ctrl++ and Ctrl+- Don't zoom
