I have the studio 1558, brightness control problem going on.
I added the repository with:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kamalmostafa/linux-kamal-mjgbacklight/ppa
Then I did:
sudo apt-get update
It still wouldn't work, so I ran this:
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

This problem just happened to me as well, I renamed the miro-log file to
miro-log.bak, and it worked. (I was contemplating a uninstall
reinstall, but decided to run in terminal to see if that would work-
around the not opening problem, I got the IOError: [Errno 5]
