Same problem here. I have Ubuntu 8.10, ATI Radeon X1600 with opensource (radeon) or ATI fglrx accellerated driver. Processing with default renderer (JAVA 2D) is inusable. Openoffice, Netbeans and others Java software are quite slow when rendering graphics. -- Slow graphics/animation in Java,
