This output kind of matches what you think would be happening. Note the
1 minute hang waiting for the network driver. The output of the screen
is filled with udev messages but I can't find them logged anywhere.

On my Atom laptop, OO Impress becomes impossibly slow when Japanese
fonts are used in a slide. Removing the Japanese glyphs and replacing
them with roman characters causes the program to return to normal speed.

My problems with this initially seemed to have gone away when I added
acpi=force lapic to the boot line. But I have since had failed
powerdowns; it improved the behaviour of the machine, but it was not a
complete fix, unfortunately. They say that a mule will work
faithfully for you for 20 years
I am experiencing this same problem on a desktop. The machine is based
on an AOpen i945GTm-VHL motherboard that uses laptop memory and a
Pentium-M cpu. I'm using a TV for the monitor, and the display is lost
(sync rate issue maybe) as the machine goes down, so I haven't a clue
where in the
I should have mentioned above that the machine is running a custom
compiled 2.6.17.13 kernel, with software suspend and acpi enabled, and
apm disabled. The config is attached.

This cured up on my home desktop system by making two changes. One was
to add the kernel boot options acpi=force lapic, as suggested above.
The second change was to use halt -p or poweroff to shut down the
machine.
