Earlier today, I ran updates that I have been alerted to by my computer. I
didn't restart the computer until after I got your email - about 15 minutes

in the previous version of ubuntu, my external drives appeared on my
desktop and when i clicked on them they opened up with no problem. now,
with ubuntu 11.10, my drives no longer appear on my desktop and when i
click on them in the home menu, they open up media such as VLC
