This has two possitive effects:
1) the display is dark indicating the computer is asleep
2) you can unloasd the modules responsible for LCD device (they sometimes
don't play
Indeed enabling GNOME Compatibility in cssm fixed the issue. AFAIK there was
no GNOME Compatibility option in 8.10 and after upgrade it was not enabled
by default which is the root problem that caused the shortcuts to stop
