I can print text without any problems (e.g., via Evince), but when I try
to print an image with the default image viewing app nothing happens
(the printer LED continues to blink as if more data were getting

OK, it seems that the GIMP-printed image was so large because the
printer driver was set to Adobe Postscript 2. I changed the GIMP
settings to HP LaserJet 1200 and now it is as fast as I know it from
Windows. I guess the problem is your default image viewer app?

I'm not sure if you consider this a feature, but it's pretty
disturbing because it makes me wait a long time (Ubuntu already boots up
slowly enough for me and now that...). Also, Windows

operating system do this. Why does Windows not need this? Why does
Ubuntu need this? Doesn't Ubuntu have a journalling file system? Then,
why should this check be done, at all?

requiring any packages to be installed or preferences to be modified. If
those buttons don't work then only a few experts will know that
imwheel needs to be installed. Everyone else will assume those

Sorry, I don't know which package to choose. There are plain too many
(gnome-xxx, gtk+xxx) and I don't have a clue what they're for. I've just
picked xorg in the hope that the devs know better.
