OK, it seems that the GIMP-printed image was so large because the printer driver was set to Adobe Postscript 2. I changed the GIMP settings to HP LaserJet 1200 and now it is as fast as I know it from Windows. I guess the problem is your default image viewer app? -- HP LaserJet 1200 doesn't print
