This is the solution with my configuration :
sudo apt-get install openjdk-6-jdk
sudo cp /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-
amd64/lib/tools.jar /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk-amd64/jre/lib/ext/
wget
that seems to have been the 'trick'. will close.

Title:
touchpad does not work even at login screen

I was lucky enough to have the touchpad detected once on booting up the
computer. Right away I checked 'mouse settings' and found the touchpad
tab; there, I unchecked disable while typing. After this I have
booted into ubuntu twice without the problem. Hopefully that will be
it. Will post

Used to work fine, then intermittently (while on maverick), and now over and
over almost every time I try to log on.
I upgraded to Natty, same problem. It worked once, and hasn't worked since.
I followed a guide online regarding this, and was told to post here with a
dmesg

and one more thing: the touchpad works fine when I boot into my windows
partition. (never saw a problem there, although I don't do windows very
often. at least this tells us it is not necessarily a hardware
issue)
