I have had this issue for 1-1.5 year despite of my and other bug reports. It
was a pain to use Unity with compiz or compiz alone. Had to use 2d or nouveau
drivers. Nouveau got new issues in 11.10 so it become even harder.
Certainly some bug exists in the proprietary drives. NVIDIA doesn't care

1) external display works fine as it is supposed when I plug in it first
time. After reboot doesn't work even when I boot without it and plug in
it back. I have to delete the file .config/monitors.xml after booting

I have tested with the same monitor I have the issue with. It works
almost fine now except of the following two issues:
1) slow. It seems worked faster on 11.04
2) when I reboot with the plugged in external monitor it doesn't work. But
works when I unplug it, reboot. and plug in after boot
I have tried with some other monitor. I was able to attach it and set
separate resolution for the external monitor(not mirroring) . I had both
notebook and external monitor(1280 x 1024 ) running. After that I
selected off option in the display manager for the notebook's display
to turn off it in

attached. Terribly slow.
The worst thing that nouvea driver doesn't work well yet for me on 11.10

So exactly what is wrong:
It seems to be nvidia's proprietary driver problem on 8*** cards when
using external monitor with large resolution (1920*1200). Compiz is very
slow to handle opened windows. Works fine without the external monitor
just at native notebook's resolution.

some more info on this issue:
just open 5-10 terminals. Everything else is closed. and see how the xorg usage
goes up.
It appears to be not in terminals issue, just ANY window. More opened windows
cause more cpu usage on xorg.
5-10 opened windows is enough to cause lags.

I have added the module p4_clockmod into /etc/modules it solved the
problem.
Not sure why cpufreq is missed from modules.
Also I think the developers should think about how to determine which
module should be loaded automatically without addition it manually.
I think the bug can be closed.

I have allocated the problem:
1. Slow transfer file speed happens only when to read from ext3 partition.
2. If I write from some other (I have a fat32 part) to ext3 on the same hdd,
the speed is normal.
3. I applies only for large files.
Could someone confirm who has the problem, that coping
