Answering my own question, for the benefit of anyone else running into this
problem: I had a local (non-deb/apt) installation of Python 2.7 in /usr/local/,

Okay, the problem was actually with the flash plugins from the
repository and on my machine, which x86_64, I had to use the 64 bit
flash plugin released by adobe.
Solution:
1) Uninstall nspluginwrapper from Synaptics Package Manager ( This will remove
flashplugins along with it).
2) Download 64
The problem was solved with the correct flashplugin plugin (64 bit flash
plugin from adobe).
