On my laptop I do *not* have this problem. It has the stable NVIDIA
driver from the Ubuntu 14.04 repo, 340.96. My laptop has an NVidia
Quadro K2000M.
My office computer *does* have the problem. It also runs Ubuntu 14.04
but has the NVidia driver installed with the NVidia CUDA toolkit,
352.63.
I'm having the same problem, on a Lenovo W530 running the 64-bit kernel.
Is there anything I could provide, or do you have all the information
you need? In a week of running 12.10 on my laptop 24-hours a day, this
has happened twice.

I've installed smartmontools and have run two short tests and am running
a long test now. The SMART log knows of the recent problems but the
tests are not discovering any problems. The problems recorded in the
SMART log are READ DMA commands. Is there anything in particular I
should be looking
Running the SMART tests from the system BIOS directly (not loading
Ubuntu) it appears to be failing all the tests. It appears to be a
hardware problem. Strange that it only started acting up now.

Weird, I don't know what's changed. Ran an upgrade last night. Now
sound works. But only one application can use sound at any time. If
flash is playing in Firefox, and if I try to start a movie in mplayer,
the movie will either play and be silent, or it will be always paused. I
can move up and

But the video problem is persistent. It doesn't appear like anyone has
any idea what the problem is, so if it does not vanish on the upgrade to
12.04, I'll try formatting the hard-drive and starting with a fresh

Hi,
Water effects are still a problem on my computer although in a slightly
different way. They do not work at all on display 0 -- in fact if I
start them on display 0, the screen image becomes fried. Display 1
becomes unusable.

so I uninstalled compiz. I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 and compiz
is mostly okay -- I'm also running the most recent nvidia driver. I'll
give the water effect another go over the weekend and let you know what

recently, I noticed that ktorrent spawned instances of mplayer that was
using 100% of system resources. My laptop was overheating and it

Probably totally unrelated, but the compiz expo utility, when run from
the 2nd display, it does not centre properly. My 1st display is
1920x1600 and 2nd 1600x1200. expo seems to think the 2nd display is
1920x1600 as well. Does this mean compiz can't handle displays of
different sizes, or

Richard mentioned. compiz with desktop effects on + the screensaver
crashes my system still.
With desktop effects off, compiz is using 50% of my processor time. I
have no idea what that is about. I'm on a duo-core laptop. So

quadro FX570M card. On the 2nd screen windows freeze (sometimes they

Something has changed. The KDE apps like amarok no longer crash. They
still output the same error messages, but it doesn't cause them to crash
anymore. The only major changes since I started this thread is I've
kept updating the distribution, and finally got the native NVIDIA
drivers working.
The problem has been fixed. I don't know what the cause was, or what
the solution was but it's gone.
