apparently, i did not quite remove all the modules. even tho the nvidia driver compiles the kernel module, apparently it doesn't get used unless the other modules are removed. running 'apt-get remove --purge nvidia*' beforehand did the trick. i now have 185.18.04 installed. however, i still
