Fixed - The symlink of resolv.conf was wrong. The following shows how -
resolv.conf-BAK was the old, broken one, resolv.conf the one I fixed. I don't
know how that happened, but I have installed the 18.04 beta version, may that
was the reason.

I tried it with the latest 4.16 kernel from http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.16.3/ - it looks like the issue is gone with
that kernel. I had no problems using my display so far.

New theory: The monitor must be on, booted up and still not in sleep
mode when the HDMI USB-C adapter is attached to the laptop. I could get
the correct resolution already twice with this procedure.

I just tried another USB-C to HDMI adapter from a friend without any issues.
I believe now that this isn't a problem with the kernel but the adapter.
The issue can probably be closed.

The issue did start appearing after an update on 17.10. I bought the
Monitor on 29.11.2017, so it worked with the 17.10 kernel version around
that time. Since HDMI on 4k only drives the Monitor @30Hz on my laptop,
I bought a DP adapter. After the random screen black outs annoyed me too

Sorry for this being filed under xorg, but I do not get "Wayland"
offered.
After logging in to Ubuntu 17.10 in Wayland, the mouse cursor flickers shortly
and then is gone.
In XOrg session all is fine.
I had no issues with the cursor in the artful beta release - I was using
after another reboot some time later it kept working again.

What you are complaining about applies to closed source. Ever tried to
convience microsoft to fix anything?
The open source model is superior to any other - IMO. Most of development
happens for customer projects because OS devs also have the neeed to make a
living.

i use 8.10 and the problem is different now.
when wlan switch was in OFF state and i want to turn it ON, i have to reboot

i had the same problem.
I had to restart X (Ctrl+Alt+Bksp will do this if you don't already know)
after disabling the Hide original mouse pointer option.
Yes, that's true. I should have noted that. The option won't take effect
without an X restart.
