This desktop bug has been around for too long; I would not consider it
low priority. Here's a pic of Windows XP's desktop options; you can have
overlapped icons or icons aligned to a grid.

I'd like to see this bug fixed; it's annoying not having this easy
rename feature. I rarely activate this feature unintentionally on
Windows XP and when I do make a mistake, all I have to do is click
elsewhere on the desktop and double click the icon again. It takes less
than a second to correct.
Just to elaborate on the pic above, when Align to Grid is checked, you
can't overlap icons by dragging one over another. This makes it
different from Keep Aligned in Nautilus.

Thanks for responding. As shown in the Rectangular area mockup, I
think the area should be a rectangle with the max horizontal length and
max vertical height as its dimensions. Your concern about where the area
begins and ends is valid for your situation, although your icon
arrangement is

Currently, the clickable area of an icon consists of the image and the
text below it. When the text is long, the areas above the text and to
the right and left of the image are not part of the clickable area,
which can make selecting the icon more difficult than it should be.
