Your /etc/init.d/cups was from an upstream installation, so apparently
you did something like make install from an upstream tree. I suggest
you do something like
sudo rm /etc/init.d/cups /etc/rc*/*cups
apt-get download cups
sudo dpkg -i --force-confmiss cups_*.deb
to restore the Ubuntu
Thanks Martin Pitt, Your solution fixed the issue.

Title:
package cups 1.5.2-9ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new
I renamed it to /etc/init.d/cups.old still the update fails with below
log, this time it looks install is failing because it couldn't find
/etc/init.d/cups file
-
mohamed@SilentStorm:$ sudo mv /etc/init.d/cups /etc/init.d/cups.old
mohamed@SilentStorm:$ sudo apt-get upgrade
pitti, this user' s CUPS did not make the switchover to Upstart
correctly. Should we somehow make this switchover in the maintainer
scripts more robust?

Your /etc/init.d/cups.old file is not a file that is provided by the
Ubuntu packages. Did you customize it in any way? Did you install cups
from a third-party source before, such as a Debian version or a self-
built one?

Hi Martin Pitt,
In the earlier posts Till Kamppeter (till-kamppeter) asked me to follow
below steps.
It seems that you still have an obsolete /etc/init.d/cups file.
Rename it into /etc/init.d/cups.old and check whether CUPS upgrades
correctly for you then.
So hence I moved the /etc/init.d/cups
One update prior I was using Ubuntu 11.10, From there I upgraded to
12.04, after which I am getting this issue.
