404 errors because nginx is configured with wrong 'prefix' ,
Having the same issue, the sites-available/default states
root /usr/share/nginx/www;
but that directory doesn't exist. Changing that line to:
root /usr/share/nginx/html;
Fixes it.

So... I had a big comment typed out, but I'm a bit high on pain killers

I addressed the default install location in Bug #1031515. That fix should make
its way into Ubuntu soon.
As far as the --prefix issue, you're correct. It was an
Marking bug as Wishlist, at the request of Michael Lustfield.

This is not able to be confirmed. In Precise, the version of nginx that
ships is correctly configured in the installer options to install to
/usr/share/nginx/ww/50x.html. The default configuration files have a
root directory of /usr/share/nginx/www/50x.html.
This correctly serves the error page
