Same here! I have installed Ubuntu 9.04 on my LG P1 Express laptop with
ALC883 codec and still no sound. I have attached the report generated
from system testing application.
I have been having this problem for over 2 years now and none of the
various kernels I have used solved this issue.

I have the same problem and the same laptop as you but today when i
rebooted without jack audio plugged in i heard the ubuntu startup sounds
before login and on startup .. then i try to listen to music or video
they dont work.. does that happen with yours as well?

retrieved the confirmation mail from the GMail spam box where it got dropped,

Actually Im not sure if this could be called a bug more than a lack of
hardware support, you know?
Seems like its just that our laptops use a particular hardware
configuration that alsa's can't quite figure out just yet. Im just
surprise not more people reported on that.
well ive have tried laptop-eapd and it does work, somewhat, as you say,
because I find it sounded kinda thin compared to what this laptop can
do. But at least now I know its *possible* that it might work .. :P

Yes, this is definitely an ALSA issue rather than a specific problem
with Ubuntu.
Actually, with Gutsy I can get speaker sound with my laptop (M1 Pro
Express Dual) using an option to the snd-intel-hda ALSA driver - I have

but it is still an issue I also have an L.G p1 express with realtek ALC883
all other issues with this laptop have been fixed with the latest gutsy

if only we can sort out this sound issue then it will be 100% gutsy

It would seem that I have a similar problem with my LG M1 Express laptop. It
apparently uses the same audio chip as the P1.
The sound works fine except for the fact that the speakers are never heard no
matter what I do.
