It starts with artefacts underneath the icons (grey bars where the shadow is
supposed to be)
Then, when 2 or 3 icons have these artefacts (mostly file folders and mail
apps) on dismount of a disk the dock hangs.

did you update the dock only or the whole Ubuntu ? in the 2nd case, we can't
say for sure that the dock is faulty, it could very well be the drivers or X or
even
