Does this just affect the time indicator, or is the time also wrong when
you enter date in a terminal? I suppose it's the former, reassigning.

No it's both.
The system date is wrong. Nothing appears to be picking up the resume
event (assuming such a thing exists).
From the help on 'synchronise time' in VM Fusion:
You can configure whether the clock on the guest operating system is
synchronized with the clock on the host.
