This bug also refers to the Trevino compiz rather than the Ubuntu
version. However, I have a similar problem with the ubuntu gutsy
version. When I login from gdm, compiz crashes (after taking an age to
come up). I restart it from the command line, and everything works fine.

Actually apport should work on this kernel again. Can you please do the
following:
sudo rm /var/crash/*
sudo rm /var/log/apport.log
/usr/share/apport/testsuite/run-tests 21 | tee /tmp/apport-test.out
and attach /tmp/apport-test.out and /var/log/apport.log to bug 122688?

Okay, so if i can anything to be of help just say. As far i can tell
by now Compiz is working on my machine (it worked before) but behaves
kind of strange. The startup script does not work anymore and actually i
could start Compiz just with the Enable button in the appearance menu.

Not sure if that helps or doesn't have anything to do with the crash -
but that is what the terminal output says after a manual start of
compiz:
