I have tried that workaround. Changed the theme back to Aluminum-Alloy-
Volcanic, and tried running Thunderbird. Trying to compose the message,
just crashed thunderbird again. Changing it to any other theme was ok.
At least the themes I have installed. And I also have all the latest
gutsy
I was looking around, and thought this might have something to do with
gtk versions. The file I deleted and was subsequentally recreated was
gtkrc-1.2-gnome2. Since most of the themes are gtk2 themes might this
be a problem. But when I check synaptic, I have gtk2 installed. just
wondering why
I had the same problem for firefox and thunderbird (gutsy updated today) and
worked for me the workaround proposed by eroulland!
After removed ~/.gtkrc-* everything is now working well
Strange thing, after reboot of both firefox/thunderbird, the directories arte
not recreated..

ah, that did it! it was the theme...
for completeness, i attached my gdb log; also note that when running
from cmdline, when crashing glibc complains about a double free.

I reported on a bug #128185. I had the exact same problems you are
