There is a work-around for this. You delay the startup of Cairo Dock 15
seconds, and it all works.
Type this as your command in Startup Applications:

Hello,
I'm a bit doubtful about the cairo-dock link as I do not have it installed. The
problem appeared after upgrading from 13.10 to 14.04. The system does shutdown

Shutting down using UI as well as tty command shutdown -h now fails to

I'm using Xubuntu (amd64) and I don't have the Cairo Dock installed.

Hi!
I've experienced this problem twice with my laptop, both after having opened
and closed the lid. I don't if it's related, but the wifi didn't work neither.
The first time I shut down the computer using sudo halt, but the second time it
got stuck on the black screen with the ubuntu logo.

I you change to guest account from the power menu, you'll be able to
shutdown from there. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the idea! I will try using Cairo Dock to shutdown my system
the next time I need to do it. Evidently, this is not an issue with the
power system. This must be an issue with Unity.
