No, I've not tried the previous version or other distributions. I only
just converted from Windows XP to Ubuntu.

Thanks for the suggestion AlpineCarver. I tried the various BIOS
options on my computer (Dell XPS), these options being:
1. Raid Autodetect/AHCI
2. Raid Autodetaect/ATA
3. SATA/PATA combination mode.
(There's another option but it's not relevant), the default value is
option (1). At any rate,
i should have mentioned that my DVD drive is a SATA drive, samsung SH-
S183L.
