What is the reason for doing this:

Couldn't we just use the .png file for the icon?

Confirmed here, too. The icon-file (/usr/share/pixmaps/touchpad.png,
/usr/share/app-install/icons/touchpad.png) is corrupt. I'm of the
opinion that the problem is located there.
