I tried the amd64 Hardy alpha3 livecd and did get a Ubuntu splash
screen and menu. However, during most of the boot sequence I had
no video signal. The machine did boot, however, and the screen
resolution was correct (1920x1200x32).

I believe that's a correct description. The 32-bit version does
work as expected. Also, in the 64-bit version no usplash screen
is shown when shutting down. (I didn't know that was supposed
to happen until I tried 32 bit.:)

Here is the log file after rebooting without xorg.conf.
It did get me back to a working video device after 10 minutes
of disk activity and no splash screen. fsck perhaps.
No xorg.conf file was created in /etc/X11/.
