I had a similar problem with Ubuntu 7.10 x86_64 on Rythembox and
disabling Crossfader cleared up the issue with m4a playback.

- Do you have crossfader activated in Rhythmbox (Edit - Preferences -
Playback)?
- If crossfader was active, can you disable crossfader and try to play the m4a
files again?

Thanks for the reply zach. Can you please confirm if you restarted
Rhythmbox after you disabled crossfader? If you didn't, can you please
restart rhythmbox and try again?
