Today i got the same problem with the auto generated xorg.conf. But i
have not changed it manualy to 'vesa'.
I can start the machine several times without a problem. but somtimes i
get this error. There can be some days between.

xorg.conf?
Yes, you can change it to vesa manually. (Or try again without the
-phigh option, but it shouldn't matter)

dpkg-reconfigure did not ask for a driver. it has set the ati driver in
the new generated xorg.conf. should i change that manualy?

-phigh xserver-xorg. Choose the vesa driver.
