Tormod, I want to report one more nice thing. Because the ati driver is
working for this machine now, so is the power management. My screen now
turns off properly for power management instead of merely going blank.
I worked around this in the past by closing the lid, but now I can walk
away
Tormod, I'm pleased to let you know the newest version from the site you
pointed me to fixes the problem for me. I can now run without an
xorg.conf AND with an xorg.conf that explicitly uses the 'ati' driver.
Marvelous. Brilliant.
Many thanks.

Attached is a picture using a flash. It shows the vertical black band
on the right-side of the screen. Perhaps the black band represents the
amount the hsync is off?

Attached is a picture without flash. It shows the fuzziness of the

Running without an xorg.conf was the same result as using the ati
driver.
I will try to get a picture.
I will then try to run with the newest version you suggest.
Thanks!

Thanks for your report.
You can also run without any xorg.conf, resolutions etc should be
detected automatically.
Would it be possible to get a photograph of the thick black line
issue?
Can you please try the newest version from

I just read through the Xorg.0,log and noticed that it complained about
the resolution at 1280x768. It smartly corrected it.
I just tried dropping the resolution to 800x600 with 16 bit color and it
is still doing the same thing: horizontally humming and there is a
thick black line about 1-inch
