Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: network-manager

I just tested i386 Gutsy on an old K7 desktop with an RTL8029 (ne2k-pci)
NIC installed. (I was messing around with a win98 game on that machine,
and I knew win98 would have drivers for it... heh, it's such a bad NIC
that I feel the need to make excuses for using it. :)

 The Gutsy live CD (and Gutsy after installing) doesn't get an IP
address automatically, because NetworkManager decides not to try. I'm
not impressed. It's better to run dhclient in vain, esp. on the livecd.
(If you don't think this is a bug in n-m, then I think it's a bug in the
livecd to not try all options for getting connectivity.)

daemon.log shows:
Feb  7 16:02:15 quixote NetworkManager: <debug> [949953735.305326]
nm_hal_device_added(): New device added (hal udi is '/org/f
reedesktop/Hal/devices/net_00_02_44_06_ba_e7').
Feb  7 16:02:15 quixote NetworkManager: <info>  eth0: Driver 'ne2k-pci' does
not support carrier detection. ^IYou must switch to it manually.
Feb  7 16:02:15 quixote NetworkManager: <info>  nm_device_init(): waiting for
device's worker thread to start
Feb  7 16:02:15 quixote NetworkManager: <info>  nm_device_init(): device's
worker thread started, continuing.
Feb 7 16:02:15 quixote NetworkManager: <info> Now managing wired Ethernet
(802.3) device 'eth0'.
Feb  7 16:02:15 quixote NetworkManager: <info>  Deactivating device eth0.

 After bootup, eth0 is UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST, but with no IP.
Neither ethtool nor mii-tool can get any information at all. Simply
running dhclient eth0 gets me an IP. But in the network manager gnome
gui, it's not even obvious how to enable eth0. (I'm a first time
network-manager user, but a long-time Debian and Ubuntu admin. So this
would really be a problem for a first-time user of Ubuntu.)

 So, IMHO, the bug is that network manager defaults to not using some
interfaces.

 I should mention that there is a pci and and ISA modem in the machine. I was
going to test them to see if they actually work and have Linux drivers.
Network Manager has an entry for one of them.
