I'm going to assume this is no longer an issue in Lubuntu, but feel free
to respond with the affected version if I'm incorrect.

I still have the issue in Ubuntu MATE 22.04.
Removing ayatana-indicator-application (which replaced indicator-application)
works around the issue.

This happens too in Linux Mint MATE 19.3 (in my case 64bit) Stopping and

In Ubuntu MATE 18.04, this happens in e.g. one out of 10 logins (not
just in the Live CD).
We tried uninstalling the indicator-application package in 500+ schools.
The problem never occurred again.
If this can't be pinpointed, maybe Ubuntu MATE and Lubuntu can just
avoid including the

Exec=/bin/bash -c "sleep 2 && nm-applet"
in /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet
seems to be a good workaround for my computers.
Both computers are using SSD disk. So, fast start-up.

Lubuntu 18.04.3 LTS 64 bit fresh install & dist-upgrade on:
* Toshiba Satellite Z30-B-15M
* Acer TravelMate B115-M
I have the same problem. Tried:
Exec=nm-applet --indicator
or
X-GNOME-Autostart-Delay=10
in /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet
Not working. Two icons in most logins.

Thanks to Alkis Georgopoulos @alkisg for the hint, `Exec=nm-applet
--indicator` indeed does work for me in LUbuntu 18.0.4.

Two Wi-Fi
Xubuntu 18.04.2
Two network icons appear at start up but not every time.
The 1st icon appears because Status Notifier plugin is enabled.
The 2nd icon appears because nm applet and network are included in Notification
area and if I choose to be hidden only the arrow appears in panel instead of
Xubuntu 18.04. In the settings panel remove the Status Notifier Plugin.
Only one network icon will remain.

No change even after resetting the panel (xfce4-panel -r).
I guess two is better than none. ;-)

I tried `Exec=nm-applet --indicator` on a Lubuntu 18.04 w/ current

It appears to be a race condition, like maybe nm-applet first registers
itself in the tray, then indicator-applet-complete is loaded, and it
shows nm-applet a second time. While if nm-applet starts after
indicator-applet-complete has finished loading, it doesn't register
itself in the tray, only
And another test would be:
In /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop
to replace:
Exec=nm-applet
with:
Exec=nm-applet --indicator
...which hopefully turns off autodetection and always uses indicator-
applet-complete. Does that work?

In Xubuntu this may be fixable by removing the indicator-application
package:
sudo apt remove indicator-application
xfce4-panel -r

I've got the same problem in Xubuntu 18.04. Two network icons appear in the

When I restart the Xfce Panel (xfce4-panel --restart), one of the two duplicate
icons goes away but it comes back especially when I resume the system after
suspend.
