To fill in what's happened in the last few months: After failing to install Hardy alpha6, I gave up and installed Debian 4.0 on my Averatec laptop, so I failed to follow this up on the laptop. However I did eventually install 8.04.1 on four desktop systems. This went well, until I replaced a tube
