It seems there is good chance that this is due to issues when

With today's update from openjdk-6-jre co. from version 6b11-2ubuntu2 to
version 6b11-2ubuntu2.1 I re-tried my Java applet (see my above post #12 for
details on my architecture) with http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml
It takes 10 seconds or so
confirmed in intrepid, icedtea6-plugin results in gray box, status is
starting applet... using 64bit Firefox

Just to add.
I think I can nail down the problem a bit more.
I had an older version of java installed on my Gutsy install, and tried
to install a new version. Firefox prompted me to install about 4
different things. The only one that works in the official Sun Java
plugin. But I installed the GCJ
