Daniel, thanks for that info.. my computer has not had any sound for the
last 2 weeks (I'm a Linux n00b, just switched) and finally now I have
system sounds!! I still haven't figured out why movies and music won't
play, but at least I feel I'm almost there..

No audio in Hardy w/Intel ICH8,
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help make Ubuntu
better. Could you please test this with the current development release
at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ and also include the debugging
information from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems ?
Thanks again.

The correct quirk for this particular board is actually model=dell-bios,
which is the default due to the following entry in
patch_sigmatel.c::stac927x_cfg_tbl[]:
SND_PCI_QUIRK(PCI_VENDOR_ID_DELL, 0x022e, Dell , STAC_DELL_BIOS),
By forcing the quirk to model=5stack, the original reporter of
Please help me take a look at this.
I'm using Hardy newest update with Internal built in sound Intel ICH8
sound card, but I failed to have any sound at all.

You
I just fixed my HP with the suggestion from TerryG
Quote:
If that works, then put the following lines at the bottom of your
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.
options snd-cmipci mpu_port=0x330 fm_port=0x388
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-digout
This works for me with Gutsy with Intel ICH7 sound.
Make sure, if you have that the ouput 'Front' is enabled (check alsamixer if in
doubt).
On my computer, Front and Master seem to be both affected the volume,
headphones and speakers alike, and the headphones volume does nothing at all.

Lates hal updates (I think) solved the problem again for me. I also got
a Dell XPS M1530 and sound output works like a charm without any
modifications to modules.

Well, that did not work for me. I re-installed the beta to get sound
working with success. I then dist-upgraded again and sound is gone again

:( It just stopped working for me. I have Intel ICH8 rev. 03.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/var/lib/alsa# lspci -vvv -s 1b.0
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio
Controller (rev 03)
Subsystem: Gateway 2000 Unknown device 0290
Control: I/O- Mem+ BusMaster+
That's great news. Marking as Confirmed. I read this afternoon on the
forums that some folks have ICH8 sound working out of the box on Hardy
Alpha 5.
So this is either a HAL sound card detection problem or an alsa-base
problem getting the right switches. I can't tell from the kernel
subversion

I noticed that you have:
snd-hda-intel: model=5stack
Did you try: model=6stack-digout
If that works, then put the following lines at the bottom of your
/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.
options snd-cmipci mpu_port=0x330 fm_port=0x388
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-digout
