Thanks Chris for clarifying this very important legal point - I should
have made this very clear. Just to re-iterate, the read errors are
because of the encryption and not because of any underlying fault on the
DVD, DVD reader or a problem with read errors in linux kernel.

Hi there,
have you looked at the following Wiki page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu
make sure you have libdvdcss2 and libdvdread3 and also if this does not
help, try the regionset command to set your dvd player to the correct
region. I got the same dvd read errors until I did
libdvdcss is a legally questionable package - e.g. in regions with a DMCA style
law, circumventing copy protection devices such as CSS is illegal.
At best, the player should produce an error that the disc is encrypted and the
user needs to obtain some licenced software to play it back.

I can confirm this issue, it happened to me when I attempted to play a
DVD I just bought, Totem should display a message providing information
about the need for the libdvdcss package and also a button wich installs
the package, an end-user would just not know what is going on and how to
solve
