Aaron, for me:
sudo update-alternatives --set javaws /usr/lib/jvm/java-6-sun/jre/bin/javaws
works well.

Java Web Start is included in the packaged version of Sun's JRE 1.6.13,
which is in the Jaunty repositories.
However, it is NOT installed somewhere in the default path --- i.e., typing
'javaws' in a terminal window gives you:
The program 'javaws' is currently not installed. You can install it
Should now be packaged for release in Jaunty. See the changelog for
sun-java6-plugin here:

Cannot do my banking because of this. I would encourage everyone
affected by this bug to report upstream. And chances are that something
can be done about this on a corporate level as well. Is the source code
released by Sun for community to recompile it?
--
Missing Java Web Start on amd64
That's because it's missing upstream (Sun doesn't ship 64 bit plugin or
javaws..).
The upstream bug is:

Guido, this is not the same issue: java-6-openjdk is an other package:

I can confirm the issue. On my hardy up-to-date 64bit this is what I
get:
~$ usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/bin/javaws -viewer
bash: usr/lib/jvm/java-6-openjdk/bin/javaws: No such file or directory
