Since it's been a very long time since any additional info was added to
this bug, I'm just checking to see if this is still an issue, and find
out what additional work should be done on this bug.

I am also seeing this bug in Hardy. I have a fresh install ( xen guest
from a hardy bootstrap ). I goto install, it asks me for my mysql root
password. I give it a password and then it fails.

I found the problem in my installation to fix my bug. The loopback
network interface did not have an IP address assigned to it, hence mysql
had nothing to bind to.

Is this a fresh install or an upgrade from gutsy ?
The referenced package, 5.0.45-1ubuntu3, is a package from gutsy, not
hardy.
