Thanks. I suspect this is fixable, although I don't know if I've got
time to get it done for Hardy for certain.

If you go into Display Monitors in System Setting and (as
Administrator) select a monitor in the hardware tab, does this recur
after that? I can patch the package so it doesn't crash, but if the
available sizes can't be gotten, I'm not sure there's a useful purpose
that can be accomplished after
