Launching thunderbird with
thunderbird -ProfileManager --sync
seems to work.
Note: I also installed thunderbird-gnome-support and mozilla-thunderbird
as they were said to improve the situation on some posts. Altough the

I didn't precise I've got the up to date 8.04 version of Ubuntu.
Thunderbird-gnome packet is also installed.
