Update: I can confirm that the system did run one day without any
problems when not running skype. Anyway, skype runs fine too after
fiddling around some time, perhaps the latest updates did the rest. So I
think this issue can be closed.

I don't know if this is related, but I had some kernel panics on Intrepid Ibex
8.10. I think they might be related to skype, as it seems to work if I don't
start skype. There was no error and I did not change any mic-related settings
though. The only thing that points to skype is this line in
The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.

Update: I have been able to resolve the mic issue using the method described at
the link below. Since then I have not had any problems with improper shut down
or kernel panic.
