I'd like to note that the patch originally referenced in the description
of this bug by Chris is indeed in the 2.6.27 based Intrepid kernel.

It would appear that this problem has persisted into the intrepid
release. The above fix should work but it seemed the blacklist approach
was the easiest for now. unfortunately, the modules don't seem to be
dropped when the kernel finishes booting. is there another way to
automatically drop
I've attached a workaround I whipped up when I got bit by this.
untar, and run make in the fixvmxe directory. Then run ./go.sh.
If you have an AMD CPU, you'll have to edit go.sh to change references
to kvm_intel to kvm_amd.

The bug persists on the latest kernel in Intrepid (2.6.27-4). Removing
kvm and kvm_intel modules and blacklisting them is still the only way to
get vmware to work. I tested this with vmware workstation 6.5. Can
anyone confirm for player or server?
