After trying Lucid alpha 1 I have found that this is now working. After
enabling 'show position of pointer when the control key is pressed' in
Mouse Preferences, the media keys continue to work.

I just wanted to add that updating to Jaunty fixed my problem. All HP
media and Quikplay buttons work properly again.

Amazingly, they work again flawlessly! And here's why/how...
I deleted all the hidden files from the /home folder and reinstalled
Intrepid. Et voila! I haven't done any updates yet, but I've never had
the media buttons working in Intrepid before. Until now. Both Rhythmbox
and Totem respond
I found the culprit. Check this bug:

Can someone please test this on a fully updated Jaunty installation?
The architecture for all hotkeys has been properly defined and
implemented recently in Jaunty, so it is expected that everything
working there.

Just a bump to add that, while I cannot get anything within Gnome to
recognize the missing keys (specifically the two QuickPlay keys on my
HP Pavilion laptop), and xev doesn't even flinch when either of those
keys are touched, I have managed to get xorg to log the events:
In Xorg.0.log:

I'm currently running Intrepid with latest updates and Rhythbox is
responding. Even the mute button is working. I do find, however, that a
simple press (enough for the button backlight to come on), is not always
enough. A slightly longer press is required, but they will work.
