We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all
reported bugs in a timely manner. You reported this bug some time ago
and there have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time.
We would like to close this bug report as it refers to very old versions
of Ubuntu and vim

gvim (gtk) starts fine if you run it with a different user from that you
logged-in with.

I see a similar thing on up-to-date Kubuntu 8.10 as of today, just that
gvim just hangs and doesn't get any window up at all.
I've attached the output of strace gvim 2 gvim_start_strace.txt, which
seems to block on a read() call.

For now i suggest you to install vim-gnome, i confirm anyway that vim-
gtk don't work!
