Any key works, even shift and the like, sometimes only once (if halt was
waiting for a couple of seconds)
But what is the difference between halt and restart?, because i think that they
must differ only on the last step
Maybe laptops now require something extra to complete a shutdown, is

I have a similar problem in Ubuntu 9.04.
Sometimes when I hit Shut down in the System menu, the system will not halt
but instead the gdm login screen turns up.
Although they may not not related, this situation is very similar to this one:

Same problem in a clean install of Ubuntu/kubuntu 9.04 on an Asus P5KPL-AM mobo.
unable to iterate IDE devices No such file or directory message when
shutdown, otherwise the shutdown procces seems OK, but a closer look shows that
all connected peripherals - keyboard, mouse, KVM-switch,
I can add something that haven't seen anywhere else, if I press a key
twice a couple of seconds after halt:unable to iterate IDE devices: No
such files or directory got the system halted message and the
shutdown completes

My PC shuts down normally, but that message indicates that something is
wrong and I have no clue if that is the case or not.

Yes, this bug started happening on Intrepid and it hasn't been fixed for
Jaunty.
Anybody has any ideas on how to debug this ? Any hints on what could be causing
the problem ?

Any ideas on this ?
I tried editing halt init script but the problem persisted. It is really
annoying and quite dangerous too, as I too put my laptop in the bag thinking
the power off was functioning.
Hopefully DEBIAN 5 is coming out soon and I AM SURE they won't have this
issue !!!

Also the same problems - I had PCLOS 2007 installed - a had never a problem -
changed cause of more support in up-to-date programs to ubuntu 8.10 :-((

I am getting the same problem. It happen on my Aspire 5520 laptop when I
went from Hardy Heron (8.04) to Intrepid Ibex (8.10). The computer
stalls at the message (Unable to iterate IDE devices... ) and it won't
shut down.

I'm having the exact same problem.
I get the same error. Clean install of Kubuntu 81.0 (just installed like
3 days ago). Can't ever shut down properly and getting the error
