I have a similar problem in Ubuntu 9.04. Sometimes when I hit Shut down in the System menu, the system will not halt but instead the gdm login screen turns up. Although they may not not related, this situation is very similar to this one:

Any ideas on this ? I tried editing halt init script but the problem persisted. It is really annoying and quite dangerous too, as I too put my laptop in the bag thinking the power off was functioning. Hopefully DEBIAN 5 is coming out soon and I AM SURE they won't have this issue !!! --
