I have exactly the same problem.
the problem stops if i exit SCIM.. but closing SCIM is not an option, sometimes
i want to type in japanese
before installing japanese there was no such problem. With other
messengers (pidgin, kmess, emesene, kopete) this does not happen.

i am using the same version(0.97.2) in ubuntu 8.10 x64 and the keyboard
