I kept using vesa for one month. Today, after a big update, including
libdrm-intel1 2.4.5-0ubuntu1
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.6.1-1ubuntu4
I gave intel a try and everything seems to work. At least, I go through
gdm :-)
