Dbus was not installed on the alpha release.
Installing manually fixed the problem on jauntu alpha 4.
I did not get any problem on jaunty release (installed from scratch)
see post 2 and 4 for more details.

look at all reported bugs in a timely manner. There have been many
changes in Ubuntu since that time you reported the bug and your problem
may have been fixed
I've retried the ebox install from a newly jaunty install (server 32 bits) and
it worked flawlessly.
During the install i did not select any services to install (just click
continue), then sudo apt-get install ebox.
Maybe there was an issue with the jaunty alpha even though it was up to
date
I strongly disagree. At first, if dbus is needed by ebox, it SHOULD on
it. Anyhow ... installing dbus doesn't fix the problem here:
r...@ebox:~# dpkg -l | grep ebox
r...@ebox:~# dpkg -l | grep dbus
ii dbus 1.2.12-0ubuntu2 simple

I agree with you these dependencies should be picked up when ebox is
installed.
Here is the list of packages i have on my system for gconf / gnome.
step...@tahiti:~$ dpkg -l | grep gconf
ii gconf22.26.0-0ubuntu1
GNOME configuration database
seems that dbus is not installed.
sudo apt-get install dbus
followed by
apt-get install ebox
fixed the problem for me (headless server).
