I have exactly the same problem -- fglrx module cannot load with the same errors in dmesg. lspci | grep -i vga 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M64-S [Mobility Radeon X2300] -- Radeon XPRESS 200M 5955 not recognized by aticonfig:No supported adapters detected

I have the same chipset on a Compaq V2402. Radeon Xpress 200M, jaunty devel, xorg-driver-fglrx 2:8.600-0ubuntu1 and kernel 2.6.28-11-generic i686. For me, X hangs, and I need to hard-reset. Can currently only use recovery netroot console... If it helps, I noticed the fglrx module is not loaded.
