Thank you for reporting this bug and including a procedure to reproduce
it. Jaunty has its fair share of blender problems more serious than this
one (it is completely unusable on many systems). Many of those have now
been fixed in karmic, which also sports a new ffmeg, which an updated
blender has

There was a related bug related corrected in 0.49b release of blender
(released september 3), I suppose that karmic you use and that is still
in developpment followed this version.
Anyway, I switched to getdeb version few time after this bug report (mars 24
2009), about 6 month ago, before

I don't think that the fix has been released on Jaunty, but at least

Trying with the version downloaded from the official site it works very
well, so I think the problem is linked with the Ubuntu package
