I got the same problem on my DELL 1501 laptop computer.
and solved the this issue by the method mentioned above:
1 ) I changed the kernel boot options by removing quiet splash and
adding debug break=mount.

installed system.

had a functional ubuntu installation running and were having trouble after the
upgrade.

I'm only familiar with the commandline which I use on my server
installs.
First you need to add the jaunty proposal repository to your
/etc/apt/sources.list and do an update of your cache.
You can then search your cache for available images using sudo apt-cache
search

I just uploaded kernel 2.6.28-12.43 to proposed. As this kernel includes
some changes that affect the access of usb storage devices at boot,

hello i am new to linux and i want to try out ubuntu but i dont want my
changes to be erased every time i reboot
i did a persistent install on a 2 gb usb using the tool in the live cd
i have already checked my live cd for error and it says that there are no errors

I reproduced this issue on my Desktop. (with the Jaunty Desktop iso and a 2Go
USB stick)
In my point of view, it is a hardware issue, as :
With my Desktop [AMD64 + HardDrive S-ATA] , I reproduce BusyBox every time.
With my Dell Laptop : Never got any issue with the same USB stick.

experiences with RC and release:
* RC Xubuntu (normal install) - Fails. Symptoms as reported by first

kernel string, it works OK. (but no persistence of course). With
persistence, symptoms identical. It seems to timeout after mounting
squashfs. If you wait for USB data reads to stop, then exit shell, it

Just tried the 20 April daily and am experiencing the same symptom:

Yesterday I tried it again.
While the system tries to read from my internal HDD, I removed the usb-stick
and repluged it 1 second later.
And then
Daniels workaround worked on Compaq 6715b. Removed and inserted the sd-
card as described and that seemed to get it out of the cycle. I did
only test the first try-without-installing option from the menu.

I confirm this method works too.
I have a SB700 based motherboard, and with beta and RC I have exactly
the same issue if I try to boot with a live USB key.
And the first time I try to unplugged/repluged USB key when the upslash
appears was the good one !

Perhaps the error is relateted to the south bridge?
Daniel Rozo and I have a Dell Inspiron 1501 having SB600 from ATI.
The south bridge of bwashed's compaq 6715b is SB600, too, if the informations I
found using google are right.
If that is true, at least three of us have the same south bridge.

One thing I've noticed lately is that I have to delete the partitions on
my removable device before running usb-creator, thereby forcing usb-
creator to format from scratch before applying the ISO image. Can you

format and re-create the USB flash, also I selected discard settings on
shutdown. Please remember to click on the QUIT button when USB flash
