I worked around by adding a line like the following in
/etc/gdm/PostSession/Default (though that seems kind of dirty to me)
/usr/bin/canberra-gtk-play
--file=/usr/share/sounds/ubuntu/stereo/desktop-logout.ogg
--
No logout
